THE PASTELS

The Scottish cult band, founded in 1981 by Stephen McRobbie in Glasgow, can be considered to be the inventors of Scottish indie pop and a constant source of inspiration for entire generations of musicians, from Teenage Fanclub to Sonic Youth, from Nirvana to Veronica Falls.

Brought to the fore by the magazine NME with the legendary C86 compilation, The Pastels debuted in 1987 with the unforgettable album Up for a Bit With The Pastels, straddling garage punk and pop. The follow-up, entitled Sittin’ Pretty, arrived two years later and subsequently the band signed with Domino with whom they released two albums: Mobile Safari in 1995 and Illumination in 1997. Both of these works show the band developing a particularly melancholic and clumsy, but warm and engaging sound. A unique sound that makes them recognisable and unmistakable decades later.

Since 1997, there have been several collaborations that The Pastels have been involved with. It is worth mentioning those with The Tenniscoats, Jarvis Cocker and My Bloody Valentine. But it took 17 years to see a new studio album from the band. Only in 2013 did Slow Summits arrive, preceded by the single Check My Heart, which confirmed the unique and immortal sound of this band, today consisting of Stephen McRobbie and Katrina Mitchell (with the help of Gerard Love out of Teenage Fanclub).
